Cat Chat: Via Gelato is here!

Gelato.

Say it and I’ll come running.

So when I found out Melissa Bow, a Punahou alum and former physical therapist who recently moved back home, was making handcrafted gelato using local ingredients like mango, ginger and lilikoi, I could barely stop myself from barging into her home to sample it.

No, seriously.

I shot this video months ago — before Via Gelato Hawaii was officially up and running.

Now, Bow serves up her tasty treats Monday through Friday around downtown (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and near Punahou (2 to 5 p.m.), then on Saturday nights at Sports Authority on Ward Avenue.

Here’s a little preview:

Cat Chat: Say Thanks

Cat Chat: Say Thanks

I love stationery.

Yes, I’m one of those.

I write letters, I send thank-you notes, I even have a pen pal from second grade.

So of course I was thrilled to hear a new stationery boutique opened in October in Kapahulu. South Shore Paperie is owned by designer (and fashionista in her own right) Stacey Nomura. We headed there yesterday to check it out.

Here’s a peek inside:

Cat Chat: Fashionable dogs

Cat Chat: Fashionable dogs

Christmas isn’t just for humans.

If you’re looking for a gift for your pooch — or your dog-owning friend — consider a local-style kimono or yukata from Hawaii-based Inu Inu Hawaii, an Asian-inspired dog apparel and accessories line created by Sasha Dominy.

She will be one of hundreds of vendors at the 25th annual Islandwide Crafts & Food Expo, happening today through Sunday at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. It’s one of my favorite places to find unique gifts for Christmas — and if I weren’t in Chicago, I would totally be there. Probably all weekend.

So we talked with Sasha’s mom, Mary, about this adorable fashion line for dogs — Sunny and Indy are fans — and where you can get ‘em in time for Christmas.

Cat Chat: Get your mojo

Cat Chat: Get your mojo

Guys, need a shave?

But secretly want a manicure, too?

The new Mojo Barbershop in Chinatown on Oahu takes the retro barbershop and gives it a modern twist.

Open this month, this 960-square-foot barbershop on Bethel Street — complete with an old-fashioned barber pole hanging outside — offers a throwback to gentlemen’s traditional haircuts and hot-towel shaves, including hand and foot detailing — read: manis/pedis — and detox face treatments for the modern man.

It didn’t take even a minute before Nonstop’s Doc Rock (@docrock) took up the opportunity to get a traditional straight-razor shave for this week’s Cat Chat. It took 45 minutes — and it was the first time Doc was quiet for that long.

Don’t believe me? Watch this.

Mojo Barbershop, 1157 Bethel St. Phone: (808) 927-8017. Mojo Barbershop is sponsoring Black Star, Nov. 18 at Hawaii Theatre.

Cat Chat: My first McRib

Cat Chat: My first McRib

Believe it or not, I’ve never had the McRib sandwich from McDonald’s.

It’s been on the fast-food giant’s menu off and on since 1981 — and every time it’s made an appearance, I’ve never been that interested in trying it.

And my interest didn’t grow when news surfaced about what’s exactly in the barbecue sauce-slathered pork patty.

According to recent news reports — including this one in the Huffington Post — whatever makes up that boneless “rib” patty is questionable. Media has reported that the pork bits that make up the meat include such things as tripe, heart and scalded stomach, not to mention the additives used as the stuff that keeps yoga mats springy and shoe soles white.

Then there’s the allegation about Smithfield Farms, the large pig producer that supplies pork for McDonald’s limited-edition McRib sandwich, and its inhumane treatment of its pigs.

So I didn’t get the nationwide fascination.

Yes, fascination.

People drive miles — even to other states — just for these pork sandwiches. And I know people — including Twitter pal Ricky Li (@rickyli99) — who love love love this sandwich.

So I had to try it for myself.

Witness my first bite of the famous — or infamous — McRib sandwich:
